Joining the Wesley
United Methodist Church How Do I
Become a Member of the Church...
- If I have
belonged to another United Methodist Church?
Once you join any local United
Methodist Church you become part of the connectional organization of the United
Methodist. This means, among other things, that you may quickly and easily
transfer your membership from one U.M. congregation to another. Simply contact
Rev. Williams and express your desire to officially unite with Wesley U.M.C. He
will want to meet with you to get to know you better. He will also contact your
former United Methodist Church to request a certificate of transfer. A Sunday
worship service will be scheduled for you to come before the congregation to be
welcomed into the family of Wesley U.M.C.
- If I have
belonged to a church of another denomination?
- If
you currently are a member of another Christian denomination (Presbyterian,
Lutheran, Baptist, Catholic), you are already a follower of Christ and a member
of what is often called the "Universal Church". You will want to learn more
about the differences between the United Methodist Church and the denomination
of which you are currently a part. Contact Rev. Williams who will be anxious to
get to know you better. He will invite you to participate in a multi-session
Membership Class which will give you important information about the theology,
history and organizational pattern of our denomination. The class will also
help you learn a little bit of the history and mission of Wesley United
Methodist Church in particular. Upon completion of the Membership Class, the
pastor will contact your former church and request a certificate of transfer. A
Sunday worship service will then be scheduled for you to come before the
congregation to be welcomed into the family of Wesley U.M.C.
- If I have
never belonged to a church?
- If
this is
the first time you have joined a church, we celebrate your decision to follow
Christ and to grow in your commitment. You will want to know more about the
United Methodist Church. You may even want to know more about Christ and what
it means to be a disciple of Christ. Contact Rev. Williams who will be glad to
talk to your about all these things. He will invite you to participate in a
multi-session Membership Class which will give you important information about
Christian faith and the United Methodist Church.
- The pastor will ask you if you
have ever been baptized. Baptism is a requirement for church membership. So, if
you have not been baptized the pastor will take special care to discuss the
meaning of this sacrament.
- When you feel you are ready, a
Sunday worship service will be scheduled for you to come before the
congregation to be welcomed into the family of Wesley U.M.C.
- Baptism
& Church Membership?
- Baptism is a requirement for
church membership. That only makes sense when you think about it. If you want
to be a member of a Christian church, it is because you want to be a follower
of Christ. The first thing we learn from the Lord is that we are in deep need
of forgiveness due to our tendency toward sinfulness. Only Christ can forgive
us. We experience that forgiveness through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. So
before we can become a member of a church we need to desire to be a follower of
Christ, and we can only a be real follower of His if we allow Him to forgive us
our sins.
